Review: Ayurveda Pura

On a beautiful Winter sunny morning we made our way to the Ayrveda Pura Health & Beauty Centre at Greenwich Milennium Village. We had looked up the meaning of Ayurveda prior to the visit, and found out that it means everything in the Universe is made up of five elements: fire, water, earth, air and space, based on an ancient Indian Ayurveda ritual.

It turned out that Ayurveda Pura Health Spa & Beauty Centre was a luxurious day Spa offering a wide range of traditional Ayurvedic treatments which would help us have a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

We booked in for our Ayurveda massage and facial and were greeted by a range of therapists, who, right from the get go, promoted their holistic energy. They promoted the core principles of Ayurveda and introduced us to a wealth of Ayurveda views of healing and wellbeing.

During the Ayurveda massage, the therapist applied the holisitic range of oils and carried out an Ayurveda art of full body strokes- it was truly an art!

The culmination of this pleasant experience was sipping on a herbal tea and being told our Dosha (body type) was Pitta. The Dosha is made up of 3 distinct bio-physical forces which are called Doshas. These are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha and I must admit the Pitta did seem to match our persona’s.

The benefits of authentic Ayurvedic treatments are truly immense. They can help reduce stress and anxiety; relieve pain, headache, and muscle tension; balance weight; promote good sleep; stimulate the immune system and encourage positive thinking.

During a comprehensive Ayurvedic consultation, highly qualified Ayurvedic practitioners will give you a complete Ayurvedic assessment of your physical, mental and emotional state. They offered us recommendations on various aspects of our lifestyle to help tackle any particular health issues as well as aiming to improve our general wellbeing.

And if the experience at Greenwich’s Ayurveda Pura’s Health & Beauty Spa gets you yearning for more, why not take your Ayurvedic experience further?
Consider taking a journey to Sri Lanka’s Barberyn Ayurvedic Resorts.

The full benefits of Ayurveda can be felt at Barberyn Resorts providing you with all the advantages of a resort hotel with the facilities of a professional Ayurvedic health centre. They are designed to improve guests’ health and wellbeing through Ayurvedic diagnosis, healing treatments, herbal medications, Ayurvedic diet, yoga and meditation.

Newly arrived guests will visit the health centre for a consultation and diagnosis with the Ayurvedic doctor. This doctor will create an individual programme of treatments for each guest consisting of oil, herbal massages, herbal baths, herbal medicines and liqueurs, as well as an individual diet for the period of their stay at Barberyn. Barberyn encourages the self-awareness and spiritual development of its guests by offering yoga, Tai Chi and meditation classes.

Masha Ma

Masha Ma returns with a S/S 12 collection that continues its unrelenting exploration of
the contemporary feminine form. Building from her A/W 11 collection that directly refe-
renced Frank Gehry’s deconsructivist architecture or “DeCon,” Ma embarks on a fashion
odyssey into the depths of feminine reconstruction. Inspired by the reconstruction of
the Château de Versailles, this collection represents the audacity with which the relics
of a bygone era may be torn down to make space for the regeneration of the feminine
aesthetic.

House of Holland

A tough girl oozed from House Of Holland's backstage and somewhat harder than recent collections. Inspired by the punk era of the 70s, each model looked as though they had walked straight from the set of 'This is England' with their bleached denim high-waist and zip details. Snake skin also dominated the collection, found on jeans, collars and sleeves, which gave off a DIY light hearted feel- the sole concept retained at House of Holland.

Jonathan Saunders

J.Saunders presented his Spring/Summer 2012 womenswear collection in a minimalistic unused office. Amongst these bare walls streamed a handful of models with flowing silhouettes, with an art-deco theme printed throughout. The models wore fluorescent cocktail dresses, over-sized work shirts and Saunders classic knits.
Generally a collection of timeless pieces that resembled an independent effortless woman.

Review: Tamassa

Upon entrance to Tamassa, we were immediately greeted with a number of friendly, young, fresh faces ready to relieve us from the strain of our heavy bags. Moving on to the check-in process in the light-flooded open space, we were then greeted by another handful of young, fresh faces, definitely a trend that Tamassa had decided to carry throughout.  With a corresponding contemporary setting, the young vibrant concept gave an immediate warm welcome.

The reception was set aside an infinity pool that overlooked the main features of the hotel on the beachfront. Arranged in three arcs around 2 large swimming pools, the 214 rooms were housed in a set of villas, all facing the seafront.

Our suites were ocean- facing so gave a splendid view of the Indian Ocean.
The suites again were of a fresh crisp interior finish, with a highly practical en-suite bathroom that had parallel separate basins.
Inside the room, we had access to a mini-bar, a range of international channels and a generous helping of fresh fruits.
We then adventured around the complex
that were grouped together in a village style and discovered a range of activities to suit every need. Whether that be relaxation in the extensive serviced spa area or energy burning in the spacious fitness centre. Each of  the common areas had a view of the sea on one side and sugarcane fields running to the foothills of the mountains on the other side-this added to the truly exceptional views surrounding this resort.

The happy, content guests who swarmed each and every common area seemed to be highly pleased with their choice of resort.
The restaurant fulfilled every dietary requirement, by providing an ample amount of food in its buffet setting for both dinner and breakfast and finally the nightlife and range of cocktails proved just as enticing.

A must-visit for families wanting a resort to suit all of their members needs.

Mauritius Holidays Direct (www.mauritiusholidaysdirect.co.uk; 0208 732 4444) offers 7 nights stay at Tamassa in a standard room on all-inclusive, including flights with Air Mauritius and transfers for £1369 per person sharing.

Review:

Samarquand, 18 Thayer Street, London

Intrigued by what Kazakh food would taste like, there was no doubt we were filled with excitement for the visit to Samarquand. Although a little hard to find, as it is simply situated behind a glass door, we were greeted with a warm welcome upon entering the restaurant. The restaurant is based underground with a very corporate, flash contemporary decor, of what you would probably expect from a Russian influence. The lounge area, however, had more of an Asian ethnic influence, and seemed to have a lot more character.

Nevertheless, we were shown to our table, situated in the main restaurant area and served a delicious range of cocktails that were seriously mouth watering. Starters then followed, that looked and tasted similar to Indian samosas, and again left us with an array of tastes in our mouth. The mains varied from rice dishes, mixed with a lamb, to dumplings and filled peppers with mince meat, which unfortunately didn't leave us with a scope of compliments. The starters were seasoned beautifully, but unfortunately the mains were a tad bland.

Overall, a wonderful experience, and definitely worth a second visit, to sample a few more of the traditional Kazakh mains, perhaps ones that resemble the delicious starters.

Review:

Dishoom, Upper St. Martin's Lane, London

The concept was to irresistable to miss- a 50s Bombay cafe in London- the temptation was too much. So, excitement began as soon as we heard the name, 'Dishoom'- an onomatopoeia for gun shooting in old Bollywood movies- the name alone gave for an exciting feature back in January!

Following the feature, we decided to make our way down and visit the highly complimented venue for ourselves. Happily, it lived up to the already published feature.

We were greeted by a handful of friendly staff who's aura oozed confidence and screamed,'you are going to be impressed.' We were then taken aback by all of the 50s  inspired Indian art collaging the walls- all of which had clearly been thought deep into.

We were served a selection of finely spiced grills, along with a famous Dishoom dahl side, that certainly lived up to its recommendations. Washed down by a refreshing cocktail, the service, atmosphere and concept certainly left our tongues wagging with delight.

Issa

The show of the season had a buzz in the air before it had even began. Everyone waited in anticipation for the collection to reveal itself. As the lights went down and the disco music began to pound, Danielle Helayel was set to deliver a storming collection.

Ladylike red felt skirts with matching hats resembled a future queen, while long evening gowns, complete with fluffy ponytails resembled a Rio girl.
A seventies theme ran through the collection in the style of gold chain necklaces dangling down the floor-sweeping skirts and skin tight polo necks teamed with chandelier earrings gave an overall feel of a Brazilian bombshell.

John Rocha

John had a real emphasis on texture this season, creating a collection of outlandish yet wearable items. Predominantly black and camel, the show was full of head garments, with textures ranging from faux furs to shaggy wools along a bias cut. Intriguing cuts gave it a ghoulish feel amongst the womenswear and the menswear collections.

Fierce faces framed the large fur collars and the distinctly gothic feel was just another take on the Icelandic braiding and plait focus this season.

Publish Date: 19/2/2011 - 12:43hrs

Betty Jackson

Jackson set the show off with a storm with a huge turn out this morning- Tracey Emin and Ronnie Wood amongst the host on the front row. The collection didn't disappoint either. Pieces flourished in strong silhouettes with contrasting textures, varying from bold red through to neutrals and autumnal hues. Woollens formed a good part of the collection with an aubergine mac forming an overall favourite. The combination of knits and mixed textures gave the looks a graphic lively feel, teamed with chunky Mary Janes.
The collection ended with a handful of black looks in a ruggedy hand-made knit texture.

Publish Date: 19/2/2011 - 15:27hrs

Ashley Isham

Simplicity ran down the catwalk in Ashley Isham's usual take on East meets West. Invisible ponytails and intricate oriental style floral head dresses were placed on each models head, emerging in rich velvets and a sea of forest green draped silhouettes.
A darker collection followed, in a hue of gun metal grey that created a liquid silver movement. Finally the 'mullet dress' was given a refurb but with a exuberant subtle twist.

Aminaka Wilmont

Model's at the Aminaka Wilmont show yesterday wore yellow contact lenses and had elaborate designs braided into their hair. Citing totemic tribes and primitive religions, their 7th season was named Totem with references to a new tribe.  White and purple prints appeared on just about everything and relaxed fitted blouses were teamed with short leather shorts. Oh and the fashion pack's tongue's were left waggling when they decided to give the shearling aviator a re-run, as a sleeveless pullover.

Paul Costelloe

Providing a grand opening for the 10th consecutive season, the Irish designer Paul Costelloe cites 'Home Grown Fashion' as the inspiration in one of the most colourful collections yet. Getting experimental with fabrics and styles, he showed a selection of metallic 60s babydoll dresses and skater skirts. The menswear collection featured bright combinations of chords teamed with tweed blazers and boat shoes.

Riad Kaiss: a prime reason why Marrakech is visited by the early-adopters.

Among the labyrinth of winding walls leaving the Medina, stands the hidden Riad Kaiss, situated amongst just a handful of other Riads. Upon approaching the Riad Kaiss, as much with any Riad, you are left to wonder what to expect, especially as you are greeted by a grand wooden door, that would take a crane to knock down. However upon entering, you are not only met by a friendly face, you are also brought into the central patio decorated with swooping trees, surrounded by a contemporary French style decor steeped with Moroccan personality oozing from the walls. Set in a maze style building with sets of various stairs leading to other locations in the Riad, the Riad Kaiss really knows how to offer an intimate setting, ensuring that each room offers its own corner, each with their own decor and furnishings to boot.

To top it all off, the breakfast and brunch served is as fresh and satisfying as the setting you will dine in, creating a perfect fusion of Gallic and Moroccan distinction.

Christopher Kane

Wrapped in black, leather, flower embroidered dresses- the models at the Christopher Kane show shunned down the catwalk in what looked like a rebellious take on Autumn necessities. Your typical floral grew over the lace, but was then partnered with edgy, black, leather, tight fitting dresses that screamed Christopher Kane.

Partnered with lace-up boots that went hand-in hand with the black leather on the dresses, gave the collection an overall crossover feel, and kept it just how the British trend seekers so love.

The typical edge that Christopher Kane opts for in his collections, works every time, and will likely be another high-street hit for the highly successful designer.

Louise Gray

Hopping back literally from the Louise Gray presentation and absolutely pining for the collection.

The embellishment on the garments looked as though it had taken some complex turns among the patchwork.

Layered fabrics together with skyscraper heels were the taste amongst the collection. Models and designer alike sported blue eyebrows, to portray Gray's inspiration for 'evolution.'

Louise Gray has certainly exceeded the fashion-packs expectations, and is evolving into a fully-fledged, old-time pro.
